You need to do a needs analysis. Do a google search for needs analysis. When we were searching for life insurance they told us to do 10x time our income which we did. We also did level term the the number of years that we would need to have our mortgage plus any children under 18. We ended up dong a level term for 25 years-this would more than cover our mortgage plus be able to pay child care expenses and college for the 3 kids.
