start by calling the phone number listed above: 1-888-567-8688. That will tell the credit bureaus to not give your name to companies who buy mass-marketing lists from them. By cutting the CC companies, utility companies, etc off at the source, you don't have to rely on their voluntary compliance and you eliminate most of the jerks who are usng your personal financial information as a tool to sell you stuff.
Contact the Direct Marketing Association too, if you want to reduce other types of junk mail, but keep in mind that they have no effect on advertising sent to 'resident' and similar non-names.
