250k+ miles if possible. & I would sell before trade, though both have been more lucrative in different scenarios. My last car I paid whopping $1k for and traded-in for $500 4 years later. Figure it wasn't worth the hassle to sell. Old car with lots of miles.
I had an old/lo mile Mustang convertible before that, that a dealer would not take for more than $500 or so. I sold it for $3k on one day on Craigslist. Was definitely worth it.
These last 2 cars had to be sold due to life transitions though. My first car I ran into the ground at 250k+ mile (toyota). I will do the same with my current minivan. I want this van to last until my babies are in college.
One reason I like buying used, you can see how different models hold up over time. This one has good odds of making 200k+ miles.
