I mentioned this to someone and they referred my to Dickens, David Copperfield:
Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen nineteen six, result happiness. Annual income twently pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds ought and six, result misery.
Of course, until very recently I never put how much I spent in terms of the course of a year. It was only how much I spent per purchase or such. But I also didn't think about how many hours have to be worked to earn x dollars, but just in terms of the monthly or annual pay! How much we learn -- and so quickly when we put our attention on it!
