If you are still technically a dependent, as far as the FAFSA goes -- you'd need to show paperwork proving one of the following in order to fill it out as an independent.
You're IN-dependent this year if:
you were born before Jan 1, 1983,
if you are working on a grad degree,
if you are are married,
have children receiving more than half their support from you,
both parents are deceased or you are a ward of the court,
or you're a veteran.

I think that's all of them.

Otherwise if the FAFSA lacks a parent signature it will raise a flag to the school, and an EFC and award package won't be created.
