Count me as strange too. I rarely receive them (people say I'm easy to buy for; what does that mean?) and only give them as an absolute last resort. To me, it means that I am saying to the recipient "I don't know you well enough to know what you want, or I'm too lazy to use any imagination at all, but I'm getting you something because I know I have to."
