My former employer (Capital One) is a world-wide company as well, with thousands of employees -- but they still use a third-party provider for their employment verifications. They didn't do this a year ago. Who's to say that your company won't do the same eventually? I'm not sure work ethic has much to do with it -- it all comes down to $$$$$.
