Re: Real Money In The Virtual Economy
This may be quite a shock to the outside world, but for regular players, this is a long and on-going epidemic. It's quite a touchy subject as well.
I don't even DARE to touch MMOs for fear that I would be addicted, but a couple of buddies of mine are full-on players. One of them is so bad that he actually spent about $100 of real money to buy millions of virtual currency to get a head-start on his characters.
Doing so allows him to build a character powerful enough to power-level his friends and his other characters. Then, with an all-powerful party, he can go after those rare and hard to obtain items to make them super powerful and, in his own words, "Sell them back for profit".
There are also enterprising groups out there that are willing to power-level the character for you for a small fee (~$20 to $40). However, some builds are horrible, and even if they're good, some players don't play well enough to use them correctly anyway....
In any case, it is indeed quite a phenomenon.
