This topic has been on my mind. My wife and I have two boys and a baby girl. The boys are 9 and almost 8. We give them an allowance of $1 for each year of their age (so the oldest gets $9 and the youngest gets $8). We require that they pay tithe and put 25% in ong-term savings and 25% in short-term savings. Long-term is for a car or college. Short-term is for something like a skateboard or playstation game or something like that.

I pay them every Friday. I think consistency is important. In that past we hadn't always been consistent.
