In New Zealand we have recently decriminalized prostitution. It doesn't seem to have had much effect one way or another. There was a lot of objection by various groups but they were told the alternative was to change the law to make it illegal for men to pay women for sex. (only women could be charged with prostitution, not men) Somehow the males objecting kept quiet after that. There were some interviews with prostitutes in the media, and they confirmed many of their clients were "respectable" men, often church goers. Changing the law meant doing away with the hypocrisy.
