Default Number of kids and level of frugality

I was wondering - do you think the number of children a family has is at all related to how frugal they are? Is it easier to be frugal with just one (not as many necessary expenses), or with many (have to spend more just to meet necessary expenses)?

I think if I had more than just my one I'd spend about the same amount of money, but no one kid would get quite as many new books, activities, art supplies, etc.
