To start use a bigger # clipper guard. I would suggest a #3 for the back and sides and a #4 0r 6 for the top. Blend in the area with scissors where you changed guards. When you cut with the guards it is just like combing through the hair and it cuts a certain length. So... don't use the shortest for a 1st cut. You can always go shorter.
