Try to buy an iron with little light on it when it's switched on. I never buy one that doesn't.
Many a co-worker had to go home because they thought they left on the iron on.

My method is to... Set yourself up a routine that you do everytime that you use the iron, so that you can visualize if you did switch it off.
Cue, is the light off or not and did I put it on the floor to cool! Oh! My cats sleep on the ironing board so they can knock it off.
