Go buy some of those plastic training pants (they look like underwear, but are plastic outside and padded inside). Line them with a diaper liner (Gerber makes good ones for this) and have at it. When he poops - throw away the liner (which will hopefully have all the poop in it) turn the pant inside out and wash it.

He may still be a bit young to potty train. If he isn't aware of his body's cues to need to potty, he won't be successful. What you can do to help make him aware is to watch for sounds, facial expressions, etc that he might make and then comment on them to him. I know for the longest time, my boys didn't even stop moving as they were pooping or peeing, so there wasn't a specific cue. But about 2.5 that cue started coming and they were able to use the potty some, but weren't fully trained until about 3.
