I'd increase that amount needed to save - at the very least women (and men) should be saving 20% of their income for retirement and ideally it should be 25%. The 10% figure is out-dated and clearly not enough in these trying times and should the Social Security system collapse? We better have some extra money-beans hidden in our back pockets!

What? Some now say save 15%?

I say, that's not enough!

That 20-25% is not inclusive of the other things we should be saving for in our household budgets. That's just for retirement. Things like once a years - property taxes, or the unforseen water heater worn-outs, need saving for as well.

This applies to men and women alike.
