Yes, home inspection is a very good idea. If you get the right kind of inspector, they will let you know the age of your roof, your furnace, what maintenance has been put off and what hazards there are. We had a gas water heater that wasn't vented to the outside! Needless to say, we made them fix that before buying the place.
