So even though I attended a fairly elite, small private school, the odds are that my daughter will not have that same opportunity because it is cost prohibitive which is really a shame.

This is very, very true. At the same time I wonder if it's really that neccesary for every single child to go to college. I know kids that went to trade school and make very good money as plumbers, electricians, carpenters, etc.. Seems like college is such an automatic choice anymore but it doesn't have to be and, frankly, many kids aren't suited for it.
