I generally will make dinners fully intending to have extras for lunch the next day. However, I do tend to go out for lunch once or twice a week... Never spend a whole lot (less than $50/mo), but those are basically the days that I forget or am too lazy to make and bring something for lunch. Also, it's partly for social reasons--I'm in a 9-month training course with a dozen of my peers, so I have no problem spending some money to go out for lunch together.
As to the health issue, I think that's almost undisputable. You never have any idea what restaurants put in their food, whereas if you make it yourself, you can completely control what you're eating. You can keep fat, sodium, and sugars down, and also have better control over portions. Bringing food from home will almost always be healthier for you.
