I signed up for Vonage (VOI) phone service. It is linked to my cable service. I get local and long distance 24/7 for a flat rate of $24.99. It did take awhile for the phone company to release my number so Vonage gave me free months until the issue was resolved. It was amazing that the tax on my old phone bill comprised of 50% of the bill. My son showed me the bill and I was paying about $12.50 for $22 local service. I switched to avoid the enormous tax and save lots of $$$. Vonage has the first month free and if you sign someone up you get a free month. Also, if you don't use your phone much Vonage has a 500 min. plan for $14 a month. What a deal!
