I spent my childhood on a farm, and then promptly went to college on the south side of Chicago. I've been lucky but I've been aware. Remember that horror stories are often exaggerations; news reports have the rule that "if it bleeds, it leads." And, unfortunately, we hear of troubles in rural areas too.
