Davidstuff, allow me to explain more specifically... Airlines always book more people than they can actually hold on their flights, assuming that some people will cancel, or miss the flight. So come time for the flight, if there are too many people checked in to the flight, they need some people to give up their seats so that others can fly. If you do this, as is recommended here, they will offer you a travel voucher in gratitude/payment for missing your original flight in order to help them out. They aren't actually good for cash value, but you can trade them in with the airline to get your NEXT trip discounted, or for free. So if you get $300 in a travel voucher at Thanksgiving then at the New Year you want to travel again, your $400 ticket will only cost you $100, because you can now use the travel voucher instead of your own cash. This can save you hundreds, or thousands of dollars if you travel frequently throughout the year.
