While I don't agree with the OP because there are many different situations out there. If this thread is a reflection of the reasoning that people have for cosmetic surgery, then beside medical conditions and accidents, it boils down to a few things.

1. People buy into the idea that a woman with small breasts isn't much of a woman.
2. The body is obviously not a temple.
3. Some people get their self assurance from their brain, skill, strength, and some get it from their look. Too bad look fades very quickly and artificial products inserted in the body eventually poison it.

Well, number 1 and 3 are pretty much the same. I'm quite disturbed by the reference to cars wash, new car for midlife crisis and fixing your body for the clothes instead of the other way around. But then, with the way technology is advancing, pretty soon, people will be able to order specific body parts that has been artificially grown to replace the ones they're unhappy with. Can you imagine a Frankenstein world?

If I'm to compare it to finance, it would be like a home equity credit line. Easier to draw on it than to save and easier to change the body than to accept it as it is.

[Anime reference for the enthusiastic: if you haven't watch Kaiba, I recommend it. It's a world where people change their bodies like their shirts.]
