I currently use Tide HE (bought on sale w/ coupons and stockpiled) but once I'm through with my stock pile I'm going to try making my own home made detergent. There are tons of recipes on the internet available.
On a slightly related note, you can save a ton of money by using vinegar instead of fabric softener. I've been doing it for 2 months and my husband (who usually notices EVERYTHING!) hasn't mentioned a difference in our clothes. It's super cheap and better for the environment. I can buy a huge bottle at the grocery store for about $1.50 compared to $4.99 for a smaller bottle of softener.
