For really dirty or greasy or filthy laundry, add 1/4 - 1/2 cup ammonia. No, the clothes don't smell bad but they're really clean no matter which detergent you use.
Consumer report tests recommends Tide 2X which I buy on special + coupon. I only use about 2 TBSP on regular wash if something is stained. I also use the cheapest detergent which seemed to be Costco's product per unit. I read that it's a good idea to change out product each time you buy.
