I wouldn't even think its money related so much as time related. Who wants to waste a whole bunch of time commuting? What's not obvious in my post is that my DH and I work in the opposite directions. We picked our current location to be as close to both work locations as possible. When we buy a house, we will do the same thing with an emphasis on proximity to mass transit. Even if we had a vehicle, I am pretty sure we both would choose mass transit over driving because traffic is insane.
