Don't be silly 5$ a month for a bank account is dumb, get a free checking account there are hundreds of them. Although I don't like them Bank of America has a free for life checking account if you open it online and transfer 25$/month to their linked savings account. Simply set up reocurring transfers in and out for 25$ and it is a totally free checking account.

Also many banks can't/don't bother to check if an ach transfer is a direct deposit or not so if you have one of the many free online savings accounts you can link it push 1$ a month from the savings to your checking to make it look like a direct deposit. No more silly fees
