This 45-minute program examines the lives of the 18th century enslaved community at Mount Vernon as well as George Washington’s changing attitudes toward slavery. Larry Earl, manager of planning and administration of the Historic Area Division for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and former director of education at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit, Michigan, is joined by Ruhulamin Quander and ZSun-nee Matema, who are direct descendents of two enslaved women who lived and worked at Mount Vernon under Martha Washington’s supervision.
Panelists include Philip Morgan, from John Hopkins University, and Dennis Pogue, associate director for restoration, George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens.
The DVD is provided free of charge by a generous partnership with George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate & Gardens.
