How old is he? There is a new kind of annuity that has come along. I don't remember exactly what it is called but it is a delayed annuity. For a smaller upfront investment, you get guaranteed payments starting some time in the future. So, for example, instead of investing $100,000 now and starting payment immediately, you invest $20,000 now and payments don't begin for 10 years or more (you pick the start date). What that does is allow people to tie up less of their money now while creating a fund to ensure that they don't outlive their savings. Money magazine has an article on these this month.
