I live in the Midwest and I live in a neighborhood with lots of kids. In the past 9 years, not one kid in our neighborhood or subdivision has rung our doorbell to ask if we wanted our snow shoveled. I would gladly pay for it -- I have asthma and my husband isn't in the best of the health. It's not like the kids are terrified of us -- they ring our doorbell to ask us to buy something for their school fundraiser. And, we don't have any pets so it's not a guard dog (or cat) keeping them away.
