I think it partly depends on the ages of the kids. Is one or more them in a car seat? If so, you need to factor in that space requirement. Also, what will you be using the car for? If you plan to travel, you need room for 4 or 5 people AND luggage for 4 or 5 people. So you might get 4 or 5 people into the seating of the car, but will you have enough storage space?
Personally, we've had a minivan since 1996. I wouldn't go any other way. It is spacious and I like that you can walk between the rows of seats. When DD was a baby, it was very convenient when we traveled. Now that she's older, she's got plenty of room to bring books, games, whatever. Plus, plenty of room for luggage, a cooler and anything else we might need. Also, we've used the van many times over the years to move things, pick up large purchases, etc. All stuff we couldn't have done with a sedan.
