I have also been on VOIP for over a year, paying less than $20 a month. I wouldn't go back to a traditional land line.

I would say that the speed (throughput) of your broadband access and quality of your ISP is important. I would not go VOIP with most of the "lite" broadband services.

I have only been without service twice, that I know of, in the past year due to a cable service outage. Once was brief and once was longer, though still only a couple of hours. I actually had more outages with my old land line service.
