It would be near impossible for us to do without our cars. For hubby, he works about 30 miles away, and there is no public transportation between our house and his job. I work part-time in NYC, and while I could take a train/bus from my town to work, I would have an issue dropping off/picking up the kids without a car. Also, living in suburbia, the closest grocery store, post office, etc. is about 1/2 mile away, so while I could walk there, I'd have trouble lugging back the week's worth of groceries. I suppose if money were so tight that we had no other alternative, we would make whatever changes necessary, but getting rid of a car is pretty far down the list for me.

Instead of getting rid of your car altogether, have you thought about ways of making a car less expensive (buy it used, smaller car with better gas mileage, shop around for insurance, etc.)?
