We have 4 bank accounts (2 savings and 2 checking).

One of the checking accounts is for electronic payment only (we do not write checks)
One of the checking accounts is for cash only
One savings account handles IRAs and mortgage (all electronic payments)
One savings account handles intermediate expenses (cars) and is an automatic payment

My comment would be see how many checks you can avoid writing, these avoids the fees to begin with. We set most of accounts to pay on 31st of each month, so average daily balance is high (get paid early in month, money sits there, then pays on 31st, we get paid the next day.
