It will still work. But, no reason to start cucumbers from starter packs. They are fast to grow and hearty, so the plant packs are kind of a rip off..
For the other 3 you mentioned, starter packs are the way to go.
In my neck of the woods, prices range from a 4 pack for 99 cents to a 6 pack for 99 cents or even up to $2.49 a pack.
