I wanted to try diving some months ago but when I went around to Ralph's & Von's I found the dumpsters locked behind fences. I think more & more stores are doing this to prevent diving.

I am a seasonal dumpster diver. This is my peak season- we mainly pick up stuff from dumpsters & curbside that college students throw out.

Our "winning season" of trash picking was 2 years ago when we completely filled our garage with multiple kitchen sets, dishes, furniture, rugs, dressers, etc. We sacrificed our garage for the summer- then threw the be-all, end-all garage sale the first weekend the students were back in town. We made $2000 for our efforts!!

not to be a killjoy about your positive points but the trash is the property of the trash hauler once its in their bins. you would think that logically you're reducing their trash but some individuals dumpster diving will leave a larger mess on the street for cleanup.

You need to be very careful and make sure that dumpster diving is legal in your area. I used to dumpster dive a bit where I used to live and then I moved to a new city. I assumed that dumpster diving would be okay in the new location, but was in for a big surprise when the cops told me that it was illegal. I got off okay, but it's not a situation that you want to be in. Just check before you try this.
