Don’t Waste Money On Cat Toys - Free Toys Your Cat Will Love

free cat toysIf you have pets, here is a simple fact to remember that will save you a ton of money:

The toys for pets are made for people, not for the pets

Think about it. When you walk down the shop aisles, you look for toys that you think your cat would enjoy playing with. Most of them are quite visual with lots of color, but this color has little to do with the cat’s senses. While cats aren’t completely color blind, it’s not color that determines if they like a toy or not. Cat toys are colorful because the owner has money and is influenced by color (and cuteness) while the cat has no money.

If you have ever had a cat, you’ll also know that what you think would be a great toy is often ignored by your cat. Instead of wasting your money on expensive, cute, colorful toys that your cat will likely ignore, try these out these free cat toys which you should be able to find around the house:

Warning: With the smaller toys, be very careful to keep an eye on your cats. You don’t want them to eat them - if they do it could make that free toy extremely expensive when you need to visit the vet.

Flashlight - You should have a flashlight already in your house for emergency purposes and it can be converted into a great play toy for cats. Not all of them go for it, but for those that do, you will have a great way to keep them occupied. In addition, it’s a great way to help kittens expend all their energy (and older indoor cats to get their exercise) without you having to get up from the couch.

Ping Pong Balls - If you have a couple of ping pong balls lying around, they make for great cat toys. They are light enough to move quickly across the floor and make enough noise against a hard surface to keep the cats interested.

Seeds: If you are eating any fruit with seeds in it, the seeds can be converted into a cat toy. Our cats particularly love cherry pits. The only warning is that you will find the seeds in all corners of your house when cleaning at a later date.

Paper: Simply scrunch up a small piece of paper and let the cats go at it. Like the ping pong ball, it’s light enough to move and make enough sound to keep their interest.

Paper Bag / Box: Cats love to crawl inside thing such as paper bags and boxes. Give them one of these and they will be able to entertain themselves for quite some time (and you as well as you watch).

Milk Jug Plastic Ring: For some reason, the plastic ring that comes on the plastic jugs of milk entices most cats into a playful mood. This is one of those toys you need to watch your cat play with so that it doesn’t accidentally get eaten.

Hair scrunci’s bands - If you have hair scrunci that you are no longer going to use, the can make a great cat toy. Regular rubber bands also work, but they have much more of a chance of accidentally getting eaten.

Bread Tie Twists: This is another one of those things that you would normally just throw away that can entertain your cats time and again. As with the milk jug plastic ring and rubber bands, make sure that the cats don’t eat it.

String / Yarn / Ribbon: These are classic home-made cat toys that have been used for ages and they still do the trick. Just remember that when you give it to your cat to play with, it won’t be able to be used in the future.

Soda Bottle Caps: Much like ping pong balls and large seeds, the caps of soda bottles are great toys for cats to paw across the room.

This is far from a comprehensive list. Practically any small item that you have around the house can be converted into a cat toy at no cost. Remember this the next time you’re in the pet store and toy that costs a few bucks catches your attention…

My cat loooooves rubber bands. She’ll walk all around my apartment with it dangling triumphantly from her mouth.

In line with the flashlight but works better IMO are the cheap laser pointers. The small dot keeps my cat on the run and it works great day or night. But I guess that’s not something that everyone has “laying around the house” which kind of defeats the point of the post LOL.

Love all the other simple object listed but really, who spends a fortune on cat toys???

I was just thinking about this last week when I noticed my cat playing with a plastic milk jug ring.

Be careful about ribbon or yarn. Some cats swallow these and they get caught in their digestive systems. In fact, a couple of weeks ago, I pulled ribbon out of my cat’s mouth and let’s just say I think some of it was already swallowed. You’ll end up with a big vet bill if you’re not careful, in which case a $5 toy would have been a better choice.

Alternative? Only take the yarn out when you can keep an eye on your cat.

What are you trying to do, choke the cat? Many of these items are fall too small for a cat to play with. There is a great chance the cat would choke on some of these items (i.e. seeds).

er… wow… ping pong balls would likely fall into the “ideal choking item” category! Like with babies, my personal opinion is to make sure that the toys are too big to swallow unless they are edible. :p

Wow, you must have some huge cats if they can swallow ping pong balls!

The toys that you can give cats really depends on thier personality. Some try to eat everything while others will play with stuff and never even consider eating it. If they do try to eat stuff, stick with the bigger toys.

My little ones love milk jug rings, but the older one will try to eat them so I have to watch. Nothing more fun than watching a cat play in a paper bag!

Our spoiled cat is incredibly picky about his toys. His favorites: laser pointer, kitty heating pad (which he wrestles with), and a specific brown stuffed mouse with a long tail with a poofball on the end. He just loves that mouse. My ankles moonlight as a cat toy from time to time also.

My first visit here, pretty good site. Will be back for sure.
Take care and cheers.

Many of these items I wouldn’t recommend because they can be easily swallowed, which is something you have mentioned, but i don’t think most people will be willing to follow their cat around to watch them the whole time as they play, and it only takes a second for this to happen. Rubber bands are especially dangerous, and cherry pits don’t sound like a good idea.

Any kind of bird feathers, particularly something larger, like a peacock feather or goose feather, fascinates my cat, but generally we play ‘together’ and i don’t leave her alone with it.

A piece of suede string or a shoelace also works well.

YEah, we use a lot of these. But I don’t encourage the cat with the rubber bands, and the string and ribbon goes out of her reach when we are not around. Those are very dangerous. Well my cat will for sure eat them. Depends on the cat too.

My cats like to play with plastic drinking straws. They do chew on them a little, but I have yet to see them chew through the straw enough to get a piece off. I do watch them when they have one and put it away when I’m not around, as well as trim down the ends when they get too chewed up and might become hazardous.

Some of these are good ideas, but not the yarn or rubberbands, as they can choke on these, and also I would not recommend the twist ties from the bread. If they are the ones with wire in them, they can swallow them and punture there esophagus, stomach, intestines, etc, or cause an obstruction, and you will have a REALLY BIG Vet Bill if they survive!

My cat’s favorites are water bottle “sport cap”s and plastic straws.

A big pile of crinkly tissue paper from my department store shopping, in a cardboard box - - cat heaven.

Wine corks! Every time we sweep behind the couch we find at least a dozen that the fuzzy guy has batted under there. Also, my old cat loved, LOVED, wrapped peppermint candies.

My cat loves plastic easter eggs. She likes them to be taken apart. When they get in a corner she can pick them up with her mouth and drop them back in the middle of the floor.
