"CPU" means, central processing unit, or the processor... I'm not sure why you're using it to refer to the computer tower. Kinda takes the credibility out of the article if you ask me :P

Ok surge protectors are for surges that are caused mostly by your city,ie.. water tower pump, everyone coming home from work turning on there tv,hotwater heater, cooking ect..
LIGHTNING DOES NOT STOP WITH A SURGE PROTECTOR.UNPLUG YOUR COMPUTERS SURGE PROTECTOR AND THE PHONE LINE WHEN STORMS ARE IN THE AREA.

now AVG NOT THAT GOOD ANYMORE,
GET AVIRA ITS FREE AND WHEN CONFIGURED ITS GREAT!
IF YOU BLOW OUT YOUR COMPUTER WITH AN AIR COMPRESSOR, HOLD YOUR CPU FAN STILL SO IT WON'T TURN, IF IT DOES IT WILL SEND AN ELECTRIC CURRENT BACK TO THE MOTHERBOARD,
IF YOU HAVE A VIDEO CARD WITH A FAN ON IT, DO THE SAME THING.AS IT CAN DAMAGE YOUR CARD. I KNOW THE HIGH PITCH SOUND OF A FAN SPINNING SUPER RPMS IS HARD TO RESIST, BUT TRY.
OK CCLEANER IS A GREAT PROGRAM TO USE TO CLEAN REG AND UNINSTALL PROGRAMS CLEAN JUNK FILES ECT...
PROPERLY CONFIGURED ITS A GREAT PROGRAM, ALSO WILL SECURE DELETE FILES.

ah, my forte.
for dirt cleaning: use an air compressor. if you don't have one, I'm sure a friend does. Just open up the computer and blow everything out! make sure you get inside the power supply and behind the motherboard, as dust buildup can cause weird electrical things to happen.
for virtual cleaning, here are the programs i use most:
1. virus: AVG free version, ewido networks virus scanner, nod32.
2. spyware/malware: spybot, adaware.
3. registry: regvac.
4. unnecessary windows components/services: XPlite.
5. unnecessary startup stuff: msconfig (built in) (click run> type 'msconfig') and go to "startup" tab, remove anything unnecessary.
6. defrag: either diskeeper (not free) or O and O (not free). (this is a VERY important step!)
7. general windows tweaking: tweakUI (free from microsoft site)

Barry:

A computer is like a car in a lot of ways. Properly maintained, a computer should last several years after it's original purchase. Personally, I still have one computer that is almost 10 years old, and my father has a keyboard that would be close to graduating high school.

How long do you think a computer should last before it needs to be repalced?
