Hi,

I built a deck (16'x20') with a little help from my friends& family. You can check it out at http://sridhardeck.blogspot.com

I will put up $$ breakdwon figures one of these days, but the total came to about $3000; including capital costs (tools). The deck flooring is composite, and the railings are vinyl.

As Will says, it was a wonderful break away from the computer and loads of fun!

I don't know what size deck you're thinking of replacing, but I and a couple of friends put together a 4.8m x 4.8m deck with rails over a sloped combination of concrete and soil.

I wouldn't say we were DIY experts, but we're all handy and it took us over a month to put it together. We were limited to working on weekends, the occasional evening after work and of course by the changeable British weather.

Total cost was substantially less than what we would have paid for contractors as we only had to consider materials and sustenance.

All in all, it was nice to take a break away from the computer and good fun too!

It would be a good idea to get references also from one you've chosen to do your deck. Ask the contractor if he has pictures of work he has recently completed and the address of a few clients of his so you can drive by and check out the work.

My brother and I built a ~800 sq. ft. deck on my father's house before selling it. We hired an experienced handyman for around $50/hr. to help ensure the structure was sound and to do the finish work, and he also showed us how to straighten and fasten the decking.

The end result was stunning; it added significantly more value to the house than the cost of the handyman.

If you're willing to do the grunt work by yourself and pay hourly for some experienced help, you can probably save quite a bit.
