There seems to be quite a bit of confusion on whether or not the United States Postal Service (USPS) post offices are open on Saturday. The post office did announce in February 2013 that they would stop delivering mail on Saturday as a way to reduce their costs. This was splashed across the news, and that’s what continues to cause some of the confusion.
While this was an announcement they made, soon afterward the Government Accountability Office came out with a report which said under current law, the post office was required to deliver mail six days a week, and couldn’t legally stop Saturday delivery. Due to the report, the USPS board of governors made the decision to delay implementation of stopping Saturday mail delivery until Congress passed legislation to provide the USPS the authority to implement a schedule allowing no delivery on Saturday. That hasn’t happened, so Saturday delivery remains in effect to this day.
Due to the confusion, a lot of people wonder if the post office is going to be open on the weekends, especially if they have an important package to send. Below you’ll find the answers to some of the most common questions.
Is mail delivered on Saturday?
Yes, mail is delivered on Saturday. While the post office has indicated that it wants to stop Saturday delivery service, they are waiting for Congress to pass a law allowing them to do so. As of right now, Congress has not passed that law.
Is the post office open on Saturday?
Maybe, it depends on the location if a post office is open on Saturday. Some post offices have Saturday hours while other post offices are closed on Saturday. Those post offices open on Saturday usually have shorter hours than from Monday through Friday. It’s best to check with your local post office to see if they are open on Saturday, and if they are open, what their hours are.
Is mail delivered on Sunday?
No, mail isn’t delivered on Sunday. The post office doesn’t deliver mail on Sunday.
Is the post office open on Sunday?
No, the post office isn’t open on Sunday (although there is an exception — see below). While you can’t get help from a USPS employee, many post offices have drop slots where you can leave your mail and it will begin to get processed for delivery. You can usually get inside a section of the post office to get mail if you have a post office box, and some post offices have weighing machines so you can calculate the cost of packages and buy postage. What basic services will be available on Sunday depends a lot on the particular post office, and you’ll need to go to find out what service your local post office does continue to offer on Sunday when it’s closed. (see what banks and credit unions are open on Sunday)
Why isn’t the post office open on Sunday?
The main reason for the post office being closed on Sunday is cost savings. It’s the same reason that the post office currently wants to stop Saturday delivery and has cut the hours of many post offices in rural areas. It simply costs too much to keep post offices open on Sunday.
Are there any exceptions when the post office is open on Sunday?
Yes, some post offices are open on Sundays before Christmas. Due to the high volume of mail going out at the end of the year for the holidays, some larger post offices remain open on the two Sundays before Christmas each year. You will need to contact your local post office to see if it happens to be one that does.
Yes, some post offices located in other retail stores are open on Sundays. The post office has also started a program where it is putting post offices inside of other retail stores such as Staples. Some of these in-store post offices are open 7 days a week, including Sunday. If you have a post office inside one of these other retail outlets, you can call to see if they are open on Sundays.
On what holidays is the post office closed?
In addition to Sunday (and some on Saturdays as well), post offices are closed and mail isn’t delivered on the following holidays during the year:
Martin Luther King, Jr. birthday: Monday, January 16, 2017
Presidents Day: Monday, February 20, 2017
Memorial Day: Monday, May 29, 2017
