I find it best to what you can when you can. This can mean giving money or it can mean helping out.

We all have to weigh up personally what we can and cannot do. Or should I say what we are prepared to to.

Hopefully if you can, you do.

Charities often find getting people to do groundwork is harder than getting people to donate money!

Stacy, I agree with you. God wants us to trust Him enough to give even when we think we can't, not the leftovers. He doesn't need or want our money but the heart behind the money. Even as we strive to pay off debt we give to our church and I also volunteer to help with things at our church that I am able and I make charity quilts so that I can have that hands on giving experience as well.

Now this is fantastic Sadie. I'll share my debt story with anyone who will listen and I always include the most important part of it all: Once we decided to pay off our debt, we put every penny towards our credit cards. Pretty soon, we found it wasn't working. I don't know why but I decided to begin tithing to my church again, even with debt looming over our heads. The very week I did this, I had three monthly bill lower including my mortgage (because of a tax change). Suddenly, there was more money. It's amazing how God takes care of our needs when we give our time and finances to help others. And it's important to remember to give what you have, not what you have left over. Giving to others makes the world go round. Thanks for this article.

Though I think it will be nice with age to be able to give more (financially), I have to agree. I find I much prefer to donate my time to charity. There are so many ways to help others, without spending a dime.

Giving small amounts does not give me near the satisfaction.

There is actually scholarly research that supports this concept. I recently read a great article published in BYU's Magazine about the subject:

That is such a nice thing. And it's being a good person. Real giving is more than a tax deduction, it's buying yourself something that lasts you and helps so many.

Thank you for that.
