I completely disagree. To me a budget isn't restrictive in a bad way. It's all about having a plan. It makes decision making a lot easier because it says "this is the next thing I'm saving for -- my next savings goal -- and any extra money from the budget goes here." And that thing doesn't necessarily have to be "stuff"... it could be building up an emergency fund or preparing to buy a new used car with cash, or paying off the home mortgage, etc.

The real problem with America is that if you gave the average person $10,000 the FIRST THING they would do is start thinking of all the ways they could SPEND this money as fast as possible.

In fact, they would probably use it for a DOWN PAYMENT on something and go deeper in debt.

This is whats WRONG with our society. EVERYONE wants to spend too much money and they spend it TOO FAST.

People need to STOP SHOPPING, STOP SPENDING, and STOP LIVING A LIFESTLYE NONE OF US CAN AFFORD!!!

@ the bill manager

I'm not sure you read the article because I never said that people shouldn't budget. I said the ultimate goal is to get to the point where you no longer need to budget. I have no problem if people disagree with me since they often do, but usually it is a disagreement about something I actually wrote.

Saying that a budget is not needed is highly irresponsible, not to mention absurd. If you had stated objective reasons why it is YOU don't need a budget then this article would come accross much differently. But in reality, a budget is always, always a good thing, ask any expert. Even people who who win the lottery and seek expert advice on what to do with the money are told to go on a budget.

People who have bills to pay, and lets take a recent college graduate example here, you have student loans, rent, car payment(thats a maybe), if not then you budget for car repairs usually, food, gas (mid 2008), groceries. That is a big chunk of change from your paycheck. And not every graduate comes out running diploma on hand fending off high paying jobs. A person in this type of situation needs to know how much to put aside for regular bills each month, compare that to expected income for the month, and factor in some unexpected payables like going out with friends since most people don't stay home 24/7. And what do you know, a budget lets you forecast these things....coincidence? I think not.

Sure, if you're one of the few who are perfectly happy being at home, with no mortgage and a hamock between 2 palm trees, then you're probably set. But that's not the reality for most people who are interested in budgeting their finances.

I give this article a 2 thumbs down even though it's a unique point of view
