Those are great ideas.

Keep them coming anyone who has other ideas.

With kids we do give CDs to the grandparents often - they are our picture backup - but a copy in a safe or safe deposit box isn't a bad idea either.

I have your solution, this is what we did for piece of mind: we scanned in every single paperwork for accounts, insurance, assets, passwords, etc. and made PDFs of each of them. We then made a CD of it and keep it in our safe. BUT...we also copy everything onto a 1GB thumbdrive that we keep in a safety deposit box. We update the content of the CD once a year and then completely destroy the old CD. Then we switch out the thumbdrive at the safety deposit box with a second drive. Then we just alternate them. Right now we are at once a year only because not enough has been changing in our life to do it more often. I am also considering doing this with my entire iPhoto collection as well. I have 13k photos on my mac and if my house burns down, at least I will have digital copies of all my important documents and all pictures. Can't replace either of those.
